Toys, Treats, a Serta® Pet Bed and More: 7 Essentials Every Pet Home Needs.

So you’ve finally decided to add a pet to the family—congratulations! You now have a four-legged companion for life. Pets fulfill our lives in ways that are truly unimaginable. However, adding a dog or cat to the mix is a big decision, so make sure you’re ready to support your pet and all of its needs!

While adding a pet to your home can be exciting, it can also be a little scary. If you’ve never owned a pet before, you may be unsure what you’ll need to have around the house to keep your pet healthy and happy.

If you’re curious about the pet must-haves for your home, we’ve got you covered! Here are seven things every pet needs at home:

1. Healthy Pet Food (And Treats!)

Just like humans, pets need healthy food to keep their bodies strong. However, it can be difficult to know if your pet’s food is good for them or not!

Pet food ingredients to avoid

Pets need to steer clear of foods that contain “feed-grade” ingredients. Feed-grade means that the food quality is low, and is usually made up of toxins, by-products and “meals” like bone and meat meal. These ingredients are rendered from dead farm animals usually, and can lead to contaminants in your pet’s food—yuck! You definitely don’t want your pet eating that!

If you notice food ingredients are packed with chemicals, preservatives and dyes, leave it on the shelf! These ingredients are not good for your pet, and won’t provide them with the nutrients they need.

Also, do your best to refrain from giving human food to your pets. We know those puppy dog eyes are hard to resist, but some people food can harm your pet. A few foods to avoid are: avocados, chocolates, coconut, grapes and nuts. These are difficult for your pet to digest, and could result in a veterinarian visit!

Ingredients to keep in your pet’s diet

To keep your pet’s diet nutritious, pick foods with natural preservatives or no preservatives at all. Also, be sure you’re choosing food that’s local to the USA with human-grade ingredients.

Picking food for your pet right off the shelf can be stressful—especially when there are so many options to choose from! Do your research online first, or check out this list of healthy dog foods to see what kind of food (wet, dry or frozen) would work best for your pet, and for you!

Some yummy ingredients to look out for in pet food and treats are: bananas, blueberries, sweet potatoes, carrots and broccoli. Before giving fruits and vegetables to your pet, always make sure it’s safe for them to eat!

Fresh, Clean Water

Your pet is going to need lots of fresh water to keep it going throughout the day—with some much needed potty breaks in-between! Keep it near their food bowl, and easily accessible all throughout the day.

For just one pet, we recommend refilling the bowl at least twice a day. For more pets, this will need to be done more frequently, so always keep an eye on their water bowl!

Keeping their water and food bowls clean is crucial in keeping your pet healthy, too. Mildew may begin to form in water bowls, and bugs may be drawn to the food bowl. Keep an eye on your pet’s bowls to make sure they stay squeaky clean.

Plenty of Pet Toys

Pets need to exercise their body (and mind) frequently throughout the day. So give them lots of toys to keep them busy! Whether it’s stuffed, chewy, squeaky or treat-filled, pets always love a new toy to play with, or destroy!

There are also lots of toys you can buy to promote healthy gums and teeth. That way your pet is having fun, and taking care of their dental hygiene, too. Rope toys are a great way to keep their teeth flossed and clean. Things like dental chews will help the health of gums and keep your pet’s breath fresh—too bad puppy breath doesn’t last forever!

A Collar and Leash

For some pet owners, this is one of the most exciting things to buy for a pet. There are so many different collar and leash designs, fits and customizations available. However, keeping your pet stylish isn’t the only reason for a dependable collar and leash.

Pets need collars with proper identification so they can be found and returned in the event they get lost. While we hope this never happens to you, proper identification is something every pet should have. This should have your pets name, and a way to contact you in the event they get misplaced.

Leashes help maintain the health and safety of your pets, too. Besides, without a leash how are you supposed to take your pets for nice, long walks? Leashes are extremely useful, and keep your pet safe and restrained when you’re on a walk, especially if they want to greet another dog or—squirrel! We all know how easily distracted a pet can be, so keep them on a leash outside to keep them safe.

Dog Grooming Items

Your pets need baths and their hair brushed just like you do! They need to have their nails clipped, ears cleaned and skin moisturized, too. Make sure you have some shampoo at home to bathe them—and lots of towels, because you’re both bound to end up soaking wet! However, you may opt for professional grooming to keep your pet clean. We suggest keeping some shampoo around the house regardless, though. You never know what kind of mess your pet might get into—hello, muddy paws!

Pets should be frequently brushed as well. Their hair deserves to be shiny and tangle-free! We suggest getting some conditioning spray to keep their coat healthy, moisturized and smelling good.

Just like people, pets can have skin allergies. Try to pick natural shampoos and sprays that won’t aggravate your pet’s skin. Oatmeal shampoo is typically very gentle and widely recommended. But if certain ingredients seem to be irritating your pet, consult with your veterinarian.

Places to Potty

Every pet needs a designated place to go to the bathroom. For cats, this may be a litter box, and for dogs, this could be a puppy pad or simply going outside. However, your pet isn’t just going to know where to and where not to use the bathroom! Take the time to train your pet, and reward them with some yummy treats when they go potty in the right place.

If your pet has a designated potty place indoors, make sure you’re keeping it clean. Empty cat litter frequently and keep potty pads picked up. Don’t forget to pick up your pet’s waste outside, too! There are few things worse than walking outside and stepping in you-know-what.
